What is commonly referred to as a Danish Wedding Cookie really isn’t Danish at all! Ask any Dane and they will tell you as much. However, that being said, a Danish Wedding Cookie is buttery and light, usually has crushed nuts and a powdered sugar coating. They are sometimes either vanilla or cinnamon.
While they are not truly Danish, they are really popular as a wedding treat. Perhaps it is the powdered sugar topping that is so appropriate for weddings. As bits of powdered sugar float about it is reminiscent of the traditional rice that is tossed as the couple leaves the church or the reception. Another thought on the crushed nuts is that they are supposed to signify the bumps that the couple will encounter as they go through married life together. There is special meaning for the sweet sugar as the wedded bliss and the nuts for the trials that the couple will encounter along the way.

Tradition and folklore always have a way of winding themselves into life’s special moments, so why should weddings be any different? The cookies may not be Danish, you may not be Danish, but Danish Wedding Cookies often play a special part in traditional wedding fare.
