Greek Wedding Cookies

While Greek Wedding Cookies are reminiscent of Spanish Wedding Cookies, they take on greater significance when offered as part of a Greek Wedding.  Kourabiethes, or Greek Wedding Cookies, are actually eaten as part of any special Greek celebration.  They are most commonly referred to as Greek Wedding Cookies or Greek Celebration Cookies.  Kourabiethes can be baked way ahead of time if stored in an airtight container.  The important thing is to let them stand at least overnight before rolling them in powdered sugar.  Always dust the bottom of the container in powdered sugar before placing the first layer of cookies in, and then dust every subsequent layer with a generous portion of powdered sugar as well.

It appears that just like Spanish or Italian Wedding Cookies, Greek Wedding Cookies have an almost “religious” symbolism.  It appears to be common among Orthodox and Catholic Christians who place special emphasis on tradition and symbolism.  A good example of this religious symbolism inherent in certain foods would be Orthodox Easter bread.  This is bread that is brought to the priest on Holy Saturday to be blessed but is not eaten until the main meal on Easter Sunday.  Greek Wedding Cookies have a history steeped in tradition and are an integral part of any Orthodox Greek Wedding.
