There appears to be very little difference between Mexican Wedding Cookies, Spanish Wedding Cookies or Greek Wedding Cookies. They are all baked with almost identical ingredients and the only real difference appears to be in what they are called. According to many people, Mexican Wedding Cookies were brought over by the Russians, but when the cold war of the 1950’s made it taboo to popularize anything Soviet, the name somehow became Mexican Wedding Cookies.
If you look at the history of wedding cookies it appears as though they were adapted by the Spanish from the Muslims somewhere in medieval times. From there, round sugared cookies became traditional fare at weddings and the tradition was imported by the “New World” when it was settled, especially in Mexico, by the Spaniards. Remember, at the time, Spaniards were Catholics and wedding cookies hold a religious significance to Catholic and Orthodox Christians.
Today Mexican Wedding Cookies are popular both among Hispanic people of the United States as well as throughout Mexico. They have become a traditional dessert at weddings and no Mexican wedding is complete without them. No matter what you call them or what your ethnic origin, Mexican Wedding Cookies are a delight for any wedding banquet.
